Best Moving Companies in Ottawa: How to Choose the Right One (and Why Locals Pick Magic Movers)

Best moving companies? You’ll find dozens of names. All promising to be careful, affordable and on time. Almost every mover says that. What really separates a smooth move from a bad one is the stuff most ads leave out: how the quote is built, what the insurance actually covers, and whether the crew knows how to get a truck onto a Centretown side street in February.

This guide covers how to vet an Ottawa mover, what a local move typically costs, the city rules that catch people out, and a week-by-week plan you can follow. At the end, we show how Magic Movers measures up against the same checklist, so you can hold us to it too.

Quick answers

  • Get at least three written quotes. For anything bigger than a studio, ask for an in-home or video walkthrough first.
  • Most local moves in Ottawa are billed by the hour, roughly $120–$180 per hour for two movers and a truck.
  • Ask for proof of insurance and find out how damaged items are valued before you sign.
  • Moving between November 15 and April 1? Check for City of Ottawa winter parking bans the day before.
  • Book 4–6 weeks ahead for summer, month-end and weekend dates.

How to Tell a Great Ottawa Mover From a Risky One

Price matters, but it shouldn’t be the first thing you compare. Use these eight checks on every company you’re considering. A mover that passes all eight is very unlikely to give you trouble.

What to check What a good mover does Red flag
The estimate Looks at your belongings (in person or by video) and gives a written, itemized quote Gives a flat price over the phone without asking what you own
Price Lands close to other reputable quotes Comes in 40–50% below everyone else, a classic bait-and-switch
Deposit and payment Asks for little or no deposit on a local move; accepts card or e-transfer Wants a large deposit up front, or cash only
Contract Puts the hourly rate, minimum hours, travel time and any extra charges in writing Won’t commit terms to paper
Insurance Shows proof of liability coverage and explains how damage claims are paid Says “you’re covered” but can’t show the paperwork
Identity Has a real business address, branded trucks and a phone line that gets answered Only a cell number and an unmarked rental truck
Reviews Has many recent reviews and replies to complaints Has a handful of vague reviews, or none from the past year
Long-distance moves Is a member of the Canadian Association of Movers or explains exactly who carries your goods and when Can’t say who will actually transport your belongings

Binding vs. non-binding estimates

A binding estimate means the price won’t go above the quote unless you add items or services. A non-binding estimate is an educated guess, and the final bill follows the actual hours. Hourly local moves are usually non-binding, which is fine as long as the hourly rate, minimum hours and travel charges are written down. Ask each mover: “What would make my final bill higher than this quote?”

Ask how damage is valued

Basic coverage is often calculated by weight, not by what an item is worth, so a damaged laptop might be valued at only a few dollars. Ask whether full-value (replacement) protection is available, what it costs, and how quickly claims are handled. Note any existing scratches on furniture before loading so there’s no dispute later.

Watch out for “hostage loads”

The most damaging moving scam works like this: a company quotes low, loads your belongings, then demands a much higher payment before it will unload. A written contract, a mover with a real address and reviews, and refusing large cash deposits are your best protection.

How Much Do Movers Cost in Ottawa?

Most local Ottawa moves are charged by the hour. Expect roughly $120–$180 per hour for two movers and a truck, with larger crews costing more per hour but often finishing sooner. (We break this down in detail in our guide to how much it costs to hire movers in Ottawa.)

The table below gives a rough idea of how long typical local moves take. Every home is different, so treat these as starting points and get a written estimate for your own move.

Home size Typical crew Typical time Estimated cost
Studio or 1-bedroom apartment 2 movers 3–5 hours $360–$900
2-bedroom apartment or condo 2–3 movers 5–7 hours [Magic Movers 3-mover rate]
3-bedroom house 3–4 movers 7–10 hours [Magic Movers estimate]
4+ bedroom house 4+ movers Full day or more [Magic Movers estimate]

[Confirm crew sizes, hours and pricing against Magic Movers’ current rate card.]

What pushes the price up

  • Access: stairs, long hallways, a slow condo elevator or a truck parked far from the door all add time.
  • Packing: full or partial packing services and materials.
  • Heavy or specialty items: pianos, safes, gym equipment and antiques that need crating.
  • Travel time and minimums: some movers bill travel to and from your home, and most have a minimum number of hours.
  • Timing: weekends, month-end and summer are the busiest periods.

Easy ways to spend less

  • Move on a weekday in the middle of the month if you can.
  • Get rid of what you don’t want before moving day; fewer items means fewer hours. Our junk removal service can clear it out first.
  • Pack books, clothes and kitchen basics yourself, and leave fragile and valuable items to professionals.
  • Have everything packed, labelled and stacked near the door before the crew arrives, so you’re not paying for them to wait.
  • Book the elevator and sort out parking ahead of time (more on that below).

Ottawa-Specific Things That Can Derail Your Move

Generic moving checklists won’t warn you about these, but local movers deal with them every week.

Winter parking bans

From November 15 to April 1, the City of Ottawa can declare a parking ban when 7 cm or more of snow or freezing rain is forecast. Overnight bans run 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.; daytime bans run 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. If your move falls in that window, sign up for Winter Parking Alerts and check the forecast the day before. Clear and salt your driveway and walkways too, since icy steps slow everything down.

Finding space for the truck

In older neighbourhoods like Centretown, the Glebe and Sandy Hill, street space is tight. Plan where the truck will stop before moving day. If the truck needs to occupy part of a city street, the City’s temporary residential parking permits don’t cover moving companies; those requests go through the City’s Encroachment Permits office (613-580-2424 ext. 16000). Ask your mover whether they look after this for you. [Confirm whether Magic Movers arranges permits.]

Condo and apartment rules

Most condo and rental buildings require you to book the service elevator and stick to set moving hours. Many also ask the moving company for a certificate of insurance. Contact building management at least a week ahead, get the rules in writing and pass them to your mover.

Peak dates around the region

Summer and the last and first few days of each month are the busiest times for movers in Ottawa. Across the river in Gatineau, many leases end on July 1 (Quebec’s traditional moving day), which ties up trucks and crews throughout the region in late June and early July. If your date is flexible, avoid those weeks or book well ahead.

Your 8-Week Ottawa Moving Timeline

When What to do
8 weeks out Declutter room by room. Research movers and request at least three written estimates. Renting? Ontario tenants on a monthly tenancy usually need to give 60 days’ written notice.
6 weeks out Book your mover. Book the service elevator at both buildings. Order boxes and start packing items you rarely use.
4 weeks out Set up mail forwarding with Canada Post. Arrange transfers with Hydro Ottawa (or Hydro One in some rural areas), Enbridge Gas and your internet provider. Update your address with ServiceOntario and the CRA.
2 weeks out Confirm the date, time and parking plan with your mover. Pack most rooms. Start using up frozen and pantry food.
1 week out Pack an essentials box. Take apart beds and furniture you’re handling yourself. Label every box with the room and a short description.
Day before Defrost and dry the fridge and freezer. Charge your phone. Check the weather and any parking bans. Keep paths and doorways clear.
Moving day Walk the crew through the home and point out fragile items. Stay reachable. Do a final sweep of closets, cupboards and storage lockers before the truck leaves.

Moving-Day Tips That Actually Help

  • Colour-code by room. Put a coloured sticker on each box and the same colour on the door of the matching room at the new place. The crew can unload without asking where things go.
  • Photograph cables first. Snap the back of your TV, computer and router before unplugging anything.
  • Bag the hardware. Put screws and bolts in a labelled zip bag and tape it to the furniture it came from.
  • Keep valuables with you. Passports, jewellery, medication, laptops and important documents should travel in your car, not the truck.
  • Pack an essentials box. Toiletries, chargers, a change of clothes, snacks, toilet paper, basic tools and bedding for the first night.
  • Name one point person. Have one person answer the crew’s questions at each end so decisions don’t stall.
  • Check before you sign. Make sure every item is in and undamaged before you sign off on the delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far ahead should I book movers in Ottawa?

For summer, month-end or weekend dates, book 4–6 weeks ahead. Outside peak season, 2–3 weeks is usually enough, though last-minute moves are often possible. Just call and ask.

Is it cheaper to move in winter?

Demand is lower from November to March, so you’ll usually have more dates to choose from and an easier time booking. Plan for snow: check parking bans, clear walkways and protect floors from salt and slush.

Do Ottawa movers move to and from Gatineau?

Many do. Magic Movers serves both Ottawa and Gatineau, so a move across the river is handled like any other local move. [Confirm pricing is the same as other local moves.]

What won’t movers transport?

Most movers won’t carry hazardous items such as propane tanks, gasoline, paint thinner, ammunition or fireworks. Plan to move these yourself or dispose of them safely. [Add Magic Movers’ non-allowable items list.]

Should I tip my movers?

Tipping isn’t required. If you’re happy with the service, many people give each mover around $20–$40, or provide lunch and drinks on a long day.

Do I need to be home during the move?

Yes, or have someone you trust there on your behalf. Someone needs to walk the crew through, answer questions and sign off on the inventory at both ends.
